A recent New York Times article stated that New York Governor, David A. Paterson, signed a state law which will require New York hospitals and doctors to discuss the options for breast reconstruction with their patients before performing cancer surgery. This gives patients information about insurance coverage and refers them to other doctors, if necessary.
The law came about through efforts from New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Evan Garfein. He said that even though Congress guaranteed universal coverage for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery in 1998, only about 30-40% of the women who had mastectomies received breast reconstruction. Think about the amount of women that would get breast reconstruction surgery if they knew it was covered under their insurance?
