Botox and Fillers Q & A

What are injectable procedures all about?

As you age, your skin loses moisture and elasticity. And we’re not just talking advanced age. Skin tone and appearance peaks in your 20’s, and given your lifestyle and genetics, you may see lines appearing by the time you reach your 30’s.

Your epidermis, or outer skin, rests on a base of support tissue in the middle layers of dermis. Youthful skin is elastic and full of moisture, so the shape of the dermis tissue, where collagen and elastin reside, isn’t an influence on the epidermis. But as moisture and elasticity are lost, your outer skin depends more on collagen to keep it propped up. When there’s a dip or crag in the dermis, your outer skin takes on the same shape.

But that’s only one way that lines and wrinkles appear. The muscles in your face that create expressions suffer the wears and tears of life too. Some of these respond by staying in a semi-permanent state of contraction. These include worry lines between your eyebrows and laugh line crow’s feet beside your eyes. When your skin follows the contours of these contractions, your face may not reflect your mood, and you could have a prematurely aged appearance.

How do injectables help with expression wrinkles?

Expression lines resulting from muscle contractions are part of an active process. If there was a way to relax those muscles, your skin would follow, and smoother appearance results. Botox® Cosmetic works in exactly this way. Using an incredibly small dilution of botulinum toxin, injections into contracted muscles cause them to relax, with results lasting four months or longer.

H/K/B uses Botox Cosmetic exclusively.

Which injectables address passive wrinkles?

When you have lines and wrinkles caused by the condition of the dermis layer, there are several injectables that can smooth your outer skin by propping it up from below, filling crags or adding volume. These injectables typically use a component already present in your skin, such as hyaluronic acid, which attracts and stores moisture.

H/K/B uses several product lines, since each has its own particular properties. Think of these as an artist’s palette. Your cosmetic specialist recommends the best injectable for the conditions you wish to improve. Product selection includes:

  • Juvéderm® Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Voluma™
  • Radiesse®
  • Restylane®
